Profile of the Working Group Green Muslims NRW

Green Muslims NRW (Germany)

The working group Green Muslims is the first network of Muslim politicians in a German party and was founded in 2006. Based in the regional branch of "Bündnis90/ Die Grünen" in the state North-Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) more than 20 active members with different cultural and religious backgrounds come regularly together to discuss and work on political issues of Muslims in the regional and national context while about 80 members belong to the network of the working group.

The working group Green Muslims wishes to be a bridge between the party and Muslim communities and holds contacts with Muslim organizations, the Green foundation, other Green party working groups (e.g. education, women, culture) and other NGOs.

The group also wants to develop ideas to improve the integration and participation of Muslims in their surroundings based on democratic principles.

The working group follows the Green ideas of grass roots democracy, ecology, solidarity, social justice, civil rights, non-violence and emancipation.

Currently the group works on the issue of representation of Muslims in NRW and Germany. Other topics in 2008/2009 will be e.g. the issue of gender and education. The working group will also help the party to mobilize muslims and immigrants to participate in the upcoming elections on local, federal and european level.
